Roxxxy: Artificial, sure. Intelligent? Nuh-uh.
January 14th, 2010 by abraxas received 3 Comments »So there’s been huge buzz over the last few weeks about Roxxxy the sex robot; heralding it as some kind of incredible breakthrough in sex robot/AI technology. We’re not convinced, to say the least.
Check this video, where Roxxxy is revealed to the world:
Now the dull, lifeless eyes and vapid, frozen posture (and apparent complete lack of mobility–you’re certainly not going to get bipedalism for your $9k) attest to the “artificial” part of the equation, but what evidence do we see of “intelligence”? How does Roxxxy differ from some kind of mechanical canned-response automaton like ELIZA?
From what we can see, so far? She doesn’t. Squeeze Roxxxy’s hand, she says she likes holding hands. Release her hand, she says nothing further until you do something else to her. But, whoa! You can have different personalities! Maybe if you load a whole new set of canned responses she’ll say she DOESN’T want to hold hands! OH SHIT WATCH OUT HUMANITY: SKYNET IS HERE.
More offensive than this braindead recorded-response-parroting machine being shilled as “artificial intelligence” is the way that the mainstream media has uncritically lapped it up; even sites which are presumably not staffed by slackjawed yokels, like PC World are shamelessly plugging this trash like it represents some real innovation in the field.
Our advice? Save your sex robot dollars and invest them in self-improvement. If any of you are tempted to believe this is a substitute for the real thing, you’ve got less going on upstairs than Roxxxy does.

That’s it? I wouldnt spend $9K on that. I was waiting for it to move.
I went and checked out the truecompanion website, HAHAHA the home page image sure is different than the stiff robot. So weird that creator is using 9/11 as inspiration: “I was remembering a dear friend who passed
away. I thought that it was sad to not be able to ever talk to
her again. I thought “wouldn’t… it be great if I could create a robot with
artificial intelligence and have it hold someone’s personality and
preferences – this way, we could talk to the robotic version of that
person and ask it questions whenever we wanted”?
On 9/11/2001, that good friend passed away
in Tower 1 at the World Trade Center. And now we cannot talk to that
person… so, this made me think seriously about how to implement
a robotic representation of a person and have it reflect that person’s
personality.”
