If you’re ever in London and feel the need for some ball gags, burlesque, S&M, or any other fetish, head straight to the Torture Garden. This club has long been the hub of London’s underground fetish scene that is, well, not so underground any more.

Sound interesting? To get in, the general rule of thumb is that you have to be wearing something that will get you stared at on the street or do not even bother showing up. PVC, leather, rubber, and body art are the norm, but cotton shirts are not welcome.

Torture Garden is a migrating party, but most often finds its home in Mass night club, which interestingly enough is a converted church. Events take the scene to international clubs, so check the website’s listings to find out if the fabulous freak show is coming to your neck of the woods.

Once inside, expect an anything goes atmosphere where sexual imagination runs completely uninhibited. The vibe is one of community, however, as no menacing or uninvited behavior is allowed. Perhaps this is what creates the climate of sexual freedom. You also might see a star or two there, as Marilyn Manson, Jean Paul Gautier, Boy George, and Dita Von Teese have all attended.

Despite the relatively friendly vibe, anticipate being shocked by the performances and rituals in the club. The Torture Garnden was even cited in an academic paper on human “blood rituals” as an example of fetish clubs’ anomalous nature. So go with an open mind, and expect the unexpected.
